Amazon Ungating Explained: What Gated Means, Which Categories and Brands Are Restricted, How to Get Ungated Step by Step, and Whether Ungating Services Are Worth It

Last verified September 2026. Amazon ungating is the approval process for selling in a category, brand or programme that Amazon restricts. Gating works at three levels: a whole category, a specific brand or ASIN, and a programme with its own qualification. Approval usually rests on proof that you source genuine products, in the form of invoices from an authorised supplier or authorisation from the brand, plus an account in good standing. This guide covers what gated means, what is restricted, the step-by-step process, why applications fail, ungating services, and what to sell while you wait.

What "gated" and "ungated" mean

A gated category or product is one you cannot list until Amazon approves you; in Seller Central it shows as "Closed" or "Approval required" against the category or ASIN. Ungated means you have that approval, or the category was never restricted for you. "Ungating" is the process of getting approval.

Amazon gates to protect buyers. The aim is to keep counterfeit, unsafe or misrepresented goods out of sensitive categories (a buyer of a rare coin or a supplement wants to know it is genuine), and to honour brand owners' requests. Three terms overlap and are worth separating. A gated category needs approval to list anything in it. A restricted product needs approval for that item wherever it sits, such as certain software, laser pointers or hoverboards. Brand or ASIN gating limits one brand's products, or one product, to approved sellers: a seller can be gated on one shoe brand and free to sell every other, and brand gates change often.

Amazon gated categories, brands and programmes

Categories commonly requiring approval include Beauty, Grocery and Gourmet Food, Health and supplements, Fine Jewellery, Automotive and Powersports, Collectibles (coins, books, sports and entertainment memorabilia), Fine Art, Gift Cards, Sexual Wellness, Major Appliances, Streaming Media Players, and parts of Clothing, Shoes and Luggage, Toys and Games (around the holidays), and Video, DVD and Blu-ray. The list changes, and it can differ by account and marketplace, so the only list that matters is the one in your own Seller Central.

How to get ungated on Amazon: the approval process step by step

  1. Check the requirement. In Seller Central, look up the category or product. It will show whether you can list, or whether you need to request approval, and what the request asks for.

  2. Get your account in shape first. Amazon reviews the whole account, not just the paperwork: order defect rate (target under 1%), feedback score, cancellation and late-shipment rates, and any past policy problems. If a metric is weak, spend a month or two fixing it before you apply.

  3. Source from a genuine supplier. Buy from a distributor, wholesaler or manufacturer that is authorised to sell the brand, or get a letter of authorisation from the brand. Buy stock you actually plan to sell, in a real quantity (ten units of an item is the usual floor), and make sure the supplier's records show your business name and address exactly as they appear on your seller account.

  4. Collect the documents. Amazon asks for invoices or authorisation that show the supplier's details, your business name and address, the date, the products and the quantities; recent invoices (within the last six months) carry more weight than old ones, and two or three beat one. The product identifiers post explains the codes that should line up between an invoice and a product page. Your business details must match your Seller Central account exactly.

  5. Submit the application. Upload clear, complete copies of the invoices exactly as the supplier issued them; up to three per application. Do not add to or mark up an invoice; if you need notes, put them on a copy, not the original.

  6. Respond to any follow-up. If Amazon asks for more information, answer within a day and completely.

  7. Read the result. Some approvals are instant; others take days to a few weeks. If approved, you can list. If refused, Amazon gives a reason, which tells you what to fix before you reapply.

Why applications fail, and what to do next

  • Invoices from a source Amazon cannot verify as authorised, such as a retailer, a marketplace purchase or another reseller.

  • Business name, address or phone number that does not match the Seller Central account.

  • Blurry, cut-off or incomplete invoices, or ones that are too old or cover too few units.

  • A brand that will not authorise new sellers.

  • A new account, a prior policy violation or suspension, or weak account metrics.

After a refusal, read the reason, fix that one thing, and reapply with better documents. Account standing affects approval, so bring your metrics into a healthy range first if they are weak; Amazon performance metrics explains each metric and its threshold.

Selling on Amazon Renewed and other gated programmes

Amazon Renewed is the gated programme for refurbished, pre-owned and open-box products that look and work like new, in categories such as smartphones, laptops and tablets, cameras, headphones and audio, home and kitchen appliances, tools, office equipment, musical instruments, watches and automotive parts. Amazon reviews your application before you can list, and sellers are responsible for inspecting, testing, cleaning, repairing and repackaging their goods. Products carry the Amazon Renewed Guarantee, a limited warranty of at least 90 days.

To qualify, sellers are asked to show purchase invoices for refurbished goods of a substantial total value within a recent window, offer a warranty of at least 90 days, and hold a low order defect rate; sellers of factory-refurbished items without a manufacturer warranty also submit sample images of the unit and packaging. The figures Amazon published when this post was last researched were $50,000 of invoices within 180 days (90 days for most categories), $2.5 million for Apple products, and an ODR of 0.8% or below over 90 days; check the current thresholds in Seller Central before applying. Renewed listings must also be priced at a discount to new, and Amazon responds to applications within about ten business days.

Handmade follows the same shape: you apply, Amazon reviews how the products are made, and you can list once approved.

Amazon ungating services: what they do and whether to use one

Ungating services prepare documents, help find qualifying suppliers and submit applications on a seller's behalf; Keyturn and Pro Seller are two examples. Pricing varies and is not listed here.

The risk is real. A service that supplies invoices for goods you did not buy, or edits invoices, can get an account suspended. A legitimate distributor will usually issue a genuine invoice for a normal order at no extra fee, which does the same job. If you use a service, ask where the invoices come from, and only submit invoices for stock you actually purchased.

What you can sell while you wait

Plenty of categories are open to new sellers: many home, kitchen, pet, office and sports products among them. Sell in one of those while your application is pending, so you build the sales history and account standing that also help later approvals. Amazon product research covers how to choose among them.

After approval: the support side of a new category

New categories often bring more returns and questions (beauty, grocery and electronics run higher than most), and Amazon watches how a seller performs after approval. Handle returns and buyer messages as tickets with the order attached so nothing slips past the 24-hour response rule while your numbers in the new category are still young.
